How to sex my coturnix quail

How do I tell if my quail is a hen or rooster?

  1. Age

Once your quail is over 6 weeks, you should be able to sex your quail. However, if you can wait, it is much easier to sex your quail at 7-8 weeks of age. This is because the quail begin to breed. Once the quail begin to breed and lay eggs the sex is super easy to tell. Just follow these steps!

  2. Lighting

Are you lighting your quail? When I ask this question, I am refering to the fact that for a quail to lay an egg or want to breed, you need to be adding DAYLENGTH. Daylength literally means how long you have the lights (or daylight) turned on your birds. For your birds to lay and breed you need to be working them up to 16 hours of light total. See the table below.

  3. Visual

Look at the vent of the bird (yes, the butt. aka where the poop comes out.). See the pictures below to see the difference.

  4. Vocal

Your males will start to “crow” once breeding. They do not sound like a Chicken Rooster but Coturnix Quail males do make a longer crow sound than females. Watch for the ones that make that noise and you can double check by vent sexing.
