Bobwhite Quail

What are bobwhite quail:

  • Scientific name- Colinus Virginianus

  • Medium size ground dwelling bird usually 9-10 inches in length

  • Native to North America

  • Game birds that are popular among hunters, exhibitionists, the pet community, and ornamental displays.

Color Variations

Wild-Type

Wild type coloration consists of mixes of brown, buff and white plumage. This coloration makes really good camouflage

White

White coloration is exactly that! Predominantly white plumage with minimal markings. White quail are often sought after for ornamental purposes.

Mexican Speckled

Mexican speckled coloration consists of a mix of brown, buff and white feathers with scattered dark or black spots. Mexican speckled coloration is a regional color mutation often found in Mexico.

Snowflake

Snowflake coloration is a Unique and visually striking plumage pattern. Often consists of white or light colored feathers with scattered dark or black spots.

Housing:

  • All housing needs to have shelter from weather and adequate ventilation.

  • Coop or pens

    • Birds cages, large enclosures, fish tanks, and many more

    • Provide ample hiding spots and a comfortable place for them to lay

    • Bobwhites also love fun things in their enclosures such as branches to perch on

  • Aviaries

    • Large outdoor aviaries suitable for keeping quail allows for more natural behavior

  • Bedding

    • Provide a layer of appropriate bedding such as straw or pine shavings where necessary

  • Hiding places and perches

    • Low perches or branches to allow roosts.

Reproduction

  • Start laying around 22-24 weeks of age

  • Hens will lay 80-100 eggs per breeding season if eggs are collected daily

  • Breeding season is April - October; or you can artificially light by following our guides

  • Hens will incubate their own eggs if allowed, watch for broody behavior and provide a hiding spot

  • Average clutch size is 12-16 eggs

  • Incubation period is approximately 23 days

Diet

  • In the wild

    • Seeds, insects, vegetation, grains and agricultural crops( wheat, corn, soybeans)

    • Permanent grassland and pasture

  • In captivity
